Get a cleaner signal.
Calibration, interpretation, purchase, and privacy answers for Metal Detector on iPhone.
Calibration & readings
How do I get a clean baseline?
Remove MagSafe accessories when practical, move away from chargers, speakers, motors, and the object you want to scan, then hold the iPhone still while the baseline is measured.
Why does the reading change when I rotate the iPhone?
The magnetometer senses a three-dimensional field that includes Earth’s magnetic field. The App uses a corrected reference frame, but nearby electronics, calibration quality, and rapid movement can still affect a reading. Move slowly and compare the same iPhone edge and orientation.
What can the App detect?
It responds best to magnets and nearby iron or steel that alter the local magnetic field. A reading does not prove what an object is made of. Gold, silver, copper, aluminium, and other materials may produce little or no change.
What do Normal, Elevated, and Strong mean?
They describe the change from the baseline measured in your current surroundings. They are relative signal bands—not object identity, depth, distance, value, or a safety judgment.
Improve the signal
Why is the field unstable?
Move away from magnetic accessories, metal furniture, speakers, chargers, motors, and other electronics. Hold the iPhone still and choose Recalibrate. A different room or surface can help.
Which part of the iPhone should I move near the object?
Move one edge of the iPhone slowly toward and away from the object while watching the change from baseline. Keep the same orientation during a comparison because sensor placement varies by model.
What does sensitivity change?
Sensitivity changes how much deviation is needed before the App labels a signal Elevated or Strong. It does not increase the physical range or power of the iPhone sensor.
Can I use this for wires, pipes, weapons, or safety checks?
No. The App is not a utility locator, stud finder, security scanner, electrical tester, medical device, or certified detector. Use the correct professional instrument and qualified guidance for safety-critical work.
Free scan & purchase
How does the free scan work?
Your first completed scan is free. Calibration or opening the App does not consume it. It is recorded only after you collect valid live readings and choose Finish Scan.
What does lifetime access include?
Lifetime access unlocks additional scans on the Apple Account that made the non-consumable purchase. It is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and does not renew.
How do I restore a purchase?
Choose Restore Purchases on the lifetime-access screen or in Settings. Use the Apple Account that made the original purchase. App Store access may be required.
How do I request a refund?
Apple processes purchases and eligible refunds. Review eligibility or start a request at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Privacy & access
Are my magnetic readings uploaded?
No. Raw readings, baseline values, scan history, and completed results are processed in memory and are not saved or sent to the publisher.
Why does the App request Motion access?
Apple provides magnetometer data through its motion APIs. The permission allows the App to read that sensor; it does not give the App your location, camera, photos, contacts, or microphone.
