    Hold the iPhone still while the App checks sensor quality and learns the surrounding magnetic field.

    Sweep slowly

    Move the same iPhone edge toward and away from the object. Watch the relative change, not just one absolute number.

Magnets, iron, and steel

These commonly alter the local magnetic field enough for the iPhone magnetometer to notice at close range.

May not respond

Gold, silver, copper, aluminium

A phone cannot reliably identify these materials just because the reading stays quiet.
