Remove magnetic accessories when practical and move away from chargers, speakers, motors, and the test object. - 2

Capture a local baseline
Hold the iPhone still while the App checks sensor quality and learns the surrounding magnetic field. - 3
Compare
Sweep slowly
Move the same iPhone edge toward and away from the object. Watch the relative change, not just one absolute number.
Know the limits
A magnetic response is evidence of change—not proof of material.
Magnets, iron, and steel
These commonly alter the local magnetic field enough for the iPhone magnetometer to notice at close range.
Gold, silver, copper, aluminium
A phone cannot reliably identify these materials just because the reading stays quiet.
Depth, safety, identity, or value
